My most recent work is now on iTunes!
It's a library of children tales for the iPhone and iPod touch (soon for iPad).
I've designed the main application look (loading screen, bookshelves, preview page, page marker,...) and illustrated two of the stories, "The Ant and the Grasshopper" and "The Bold Knight, The Apples of Youth and the Water of Life".

cenário 3D com texturas/3D textured background

Depois e acabar a modelação, hora de texturar tudo.
Todos os mapas de UV foram criados utilizando a função "marcar costuras" no Blender, com a excepção da plataforma, onde usei o metodo de "projectar desta vista", por ser mais rápido neste caso.
As texturas são compostar por 3-10 camadas principais, criadas em Corel, e depois ajustadas no Photoshop, onde depois adicionei camadas com detalhes.
Próxima passo, criar a água e o fundo em matte.

After the modeling is completed, enter the textures.
I created all the UV maps using the "make seam" feature in Blender, except for the platform, that was done using the "project from view" method (it was faster).

The textures are composed by 3-10 layers, the main ones created in Corel, and then adjusted in Photoshop, where the detail layers were added.

Next up, doing the water and the matte painting background.

Ambient Occlusion

Um render do meu mais recente projecto com cenários 3D utilizando AO (ambient occlusion) em Blender. Estou a manter tudo muito low-poly, para tentar ser o mais simplista e icónico possivel . O guia de como simplificar a geometria tem sido o jogo American McGee's Grimm, embora a minha simplificação não seja tão extrema.
Não existe nada para além da árvore porque o resto será um matte criado em Photoshop.
Mais novidades em breve.

A render of my most recent project with 3D backdrops using AO (ambient occlusion) created in Blender. I'm keeping it low-poly to remain as simplistic and iconic as possible.The guide on how to simplify geometry has been American McGee's Grimm, although I'm not going that extreme.
There's nothing beyond the tree because the landscape will be a Photoshop matte painting.
More to come soon.

Alguns esboços dos rinocerontes do Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa. Não sou apologista de aprisionar animais, mas aqui na cidade e sem tempo de me afastar o suficiente para ver animais a sério, esta é a única opção.
Foram feitos à mão, com lápis azul, em cima do bloco no corrimão por cima da jaula dos animais.

A few sketches of the rhinos at the Lisbon's Zoo. I don't agree with the whole concept of the zoo, but have to admit that with no time go out of town to see animals other than people, cats and dogs, this is my only option for live drawing.
These were hand drawn on the sketch pad on a railling over the cage of the great beasts.

Talvez por ter espaço para por as caras do casal e não apenas para uma pessoa, e também porque o final é uma sequência de dança estilo "Step Up", fazendo as garinas sentir-se num Dirty Dancing do sec. XXI, ou assim eu espero.

Another one of my animations for the Face in Hole site.
This one arrives a little late to the blog, but this way I can coment on the success it was around Valentines Day '09. Maybe that was due to fact that it had holes for the couple and not just for one person, and also 'cause the ending spins into a "Step Up" like choreography, making the girls feel like they're in a 21st century Dirty Dancing. At least thats that's what I was aiming at.

O Novo aspecto/ the New look

Esta alteração de aspecto já era necessária à algum tempo.
É mais limpa, de leitura mais imediata, mais dinâmica e mais de acordo com o que tenho andado a fazer na última semana e nas férias de Natal -desenhar à mão.
Já estava preso ao computador à uns meses e finalmente arranjei um tempinho para desenhar à mão, retomar o traço e evoluir (no novo cabeçalho estão alguns desses desenhos novos).

Os titulos e botões agora estão todos em inglês, ao invês de inglês e português porque tanto portugueses como brasileiros entendem inglês, mas os ingleses não entendem português. Por isso estando apenas em inglês, toa a gente percebe à mesma, e é menos redundante. Os posts continuaram a ser bilingues.

Brevemente irei postar uma reel actualizada assim como o passo-a-passo dos novos projectos.

This change of look was long over due.
It's cleaner, easier to read, more dinamic and more to do with what I've been doing lately -hand drawing.
I was completelly hooked to the computer for moths, but finally now I have some time to resume my sketching, develop my drawing skills and evolve (some samples of those drawings in the header).

Soon I'll be posting an updated reel and some step-to-step on the new projects.

Outro dos desenhos para o projecto infantil de fadas que foi rejeitado por ser "exactamente o pretendido, mas demasiado juvenil". Para o personagem final foram aproveitadas apenas as barbatanas.
O desenho foi feito em Corel e o cenário é Blender (usei uma lampada projector e um video de causticos como textura para fazer o efeito de luzes no fundo).

Another of the concepts for the children's fairy tale that was rejected due to being "exactly what was needed, but to adolescent". For the final , more childish character, only the flippers were kept.
The character was designed in Corel and the background is Blender ( I used a spotlight with a caustics video as texture to create the light effects on the bottom).

This clip animated by me at Bang! Bang! Animation a couple of months ago, is part of the Sofia's Diary tv show, currently airing on Channel 5 in England, whose episodes are available at Bebo's website.
It's a liveaction show, but the main character's imagination is animated.
The character design and overall look of the show is by Armando Coelho, and the final editing is by Miguel Braga.

Tuguex - Tiazorra Making of

Este personagem da série "Tuguex" foi o ultimo a ser desenhado aquando da pre-produção da série. Isto devido a ela ter de ser uma tiazorra emproada e futil por fora, mas matreira como uma raposa por dentro.
Desenhei estes 2 sketches , que foram rejeitados pelo escritor/criador da série, pelo que para chegar ao desenho final acabei por pegar na outra personagem feminina da série e altereia no Anime Studio Pro.

This character from the series "Tuguex" was the last one to be completed back when I was designing them. This was so due to her having to be a futile-stuck-up-forty-something-office-snoop on the out side, but be cunning as a fox on the inside.

I drew those two sketches, that were rejected by the writer/creator of the show, and ultimatly took the other female character and tweeked her on Anime Studio to end up with the colored one on the right.

A Bruxa má / The Evil One

Criei este personagem para para um trabalho, o trabalho foi elugiado, mas rejeitado porque é um projecto infantil e o desenho fico demasiado juvenil/adulto.

This is a character that I did as concept for a work that was not picked up. I went over the top making it too teen/adult instead of more childish and cartoony.

O post de hoje é a anunciada renovação do blog :)
Finalmente conclui tudo o que queria fazer de imagens para por isto com um look mais Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones, The Mummy ou Romancing the Stone, como preferirem.
Os desenhos são inspirados nos pictogramas Aztecas e foi tudo desenhado em Corel e depois texturado em Photoshop. A iguana e o macaco são desenhos meus do ano passado adaptei para encaixarem no cenário Sul Americano.

I finaly concluded all the elements I had envisioned for the Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones, The Mummy or Romancing the Stone look I was going for.
The elements are Aztec inspired and were all drawn in Corel and then textured in Photoshop. The iguana and the monkey are a couple of drawing of mine from last year wich I ajusted to best fit the new South American backdrop.nov

Este cinema foi modelado por mim em Blender a partir de um desenho do Pedro "JAG" Gomes quando estávamos os dois na Just Blue há um ano atrás.

O conceito era um cinema americano clássico com a entrada tipica por baixo do Poster com o filme que estava na sala e com a bilheteira por trás do vidro.

This movie theater was modeled by me in Blender from a design by Pedro "JAG" Gomes when we were both working at Just Blue, a year ago.

The concept was a classic american theater, with the lobby beneath the huge poster of the "now playing" movie, complete with the ticket selling booth behind the glass.

Estou actualmente a alterar o look do blog, como podem ter notado. Está agora em formato panorâmico, mais largo e com o background verde para preparar o novo aspecto "selva" que o blog irá ter.
O Maia desenhado em 7 frames acima será parte do novo cabeçalho.

I'm currently changing the l.ook of the blog, as you might have noticed. It's now wide screen format :), and the background went green, as a preparation to the new "jungle look" the blog will have.

Depois dos videos das Docemania, este foi o filme seguinte.
O cliente é a Cybergraphix, e o projecto é o "My Very Own Adventure".
Este é o 2º filme animado na Bang!Bang! Animation, e o 1º em que eu participei.
Fui responsável pelo desenho das personagens camaleão, pato e a tigra Kelly.

Os personagens e os cenários foram desenhados pelo Pedro "JAG" Gomes, o animatic foi feito pelo JAG, Miguel Braga e Armando Coelho.
A animação foi feita pelo JAG até à parte onde o Gotinhas vê letras na parede do lavatório, e daí até ao final foi animado por mim, João Alves.

The characters and backgrounds were design by Pedro "JAG" Gomes, the animatic was created by JAG, Miguel Braga and Armando Coelho.
The animation up to the part were the drop of water reads of the wall of the sink was made by JAG, and from there 'till the end was animated by me, João Alves.

Depois decidiu-se fazer tudo em 3D, por isso este é o único video 2D dos personagens.

Just a test I did in Anime Studio last year for a ghost project I was involved in.

Kung Fu Panda

Aqui está algo feito ontem depois de dar uma olhadela pelo livro de produção do filme "Kung Fu Panda" da Dreamworks, que estreia no proximo mês nos cinemas. Espero que o filme seja tão bom como o aspecto gráfico. O pessoal do departamento de arte da Dreamworks fez um trabalho incrivel.

Há um ano atrás era isto que eu andava a fazer, episódios da "Trupe Intrépida" para o programa "Ilha das Cores" que passa no RTP 2.
Os personagens são todos o mesmo, mas com distorção de proporções e com cores e um ou outro acessório.
Foi tudo animado em Anime Studio Pro.

One year ago this is what I was doing, episodes of the "Trupe Intrépida" for the TV show "Ilha das Cores" that's on the RTP 2 channel.
The characters have all the same base, some are stretched, others are shortened, the colors change, and some accessories are added.
Everything was created and animated in Anime Studio Pro.

Tuguex ep 13 - Best of

Depois de umas semanas loucas para acabar um trabalho a tempo e horas, finalmente tempo para respirar, preencher a declaração de IRS e postar aqui o último episódio de Tuguex.
O 13º episódio é um "Best of" ou um "Clip Show" como preferirem, é um apanhado de algumas das cenas mais cómicas dos 12 episódios anteriores.
Algumas cenas foram retocadas de modo a corrigir gafes (há sempre uns que passam), ou de modo a ficarem mais cómicas (acrescentar coisas que se queria ter posto originalmente , mas para as quas não houve tempo).

Brevemente irei postar trabalhos inéditos no blog, do que fiz antes do Tuguex profissionalmente no ano de 2007.

Sincronismo labial / Lipsynch

Estas são as bocas usadas para fazer falar o personagem Garanhão do "Tuguex".
Para este tutorial precisam dos softwares Anime Studio Pro e do Papagayo.

Todas as bocas são desenhadas no Anime Studio Pro com o mesmo numero de pontos e são feitas em camadas separadas (aconselho a fazerem a boca "AI" e depois copiarem essa camada e mudarem a posição dos pontos para obterem as novas bocas).
Essas camadas são inseridas numa camada "switch layer" de modo a ficarem todas agrupadas.
Depois no programa Papagayo abram o ficheiro de audio e escrevam o texto correspondente à fala. Carreguem em "phonetic break down" e agora ajustem as barras de texto para alinhar com o som. Quando já estiver bem ajustado o texto ao som exportem um ficheiro .dat.
Nota: no papagayo podem escolher 3 idiomas para o "phonetic break down", inglês, espanhol e italiano. Para sincronizar com textos em português usem o espanhol, têm é de retirar os acentos e ter atenção aos "b" que às vezes o programa converte em "v" e vice-versa.
Voltem ao Anime Studio Pro, seleccionema "switch layer" das bocas e cliquem em layer settings. No último separador da caixa de opções que aparece (switch) activem a interpolação (é o que faz as bocas fluirem de uma pose para outra em vez de saltarem) e importem o ficheiro .dat que exportaram do Papagayo. Cliquem OK e se tudo correu bem a timeline está cheia de key frames. E já está tudo sincronizado, o personagem já fala.
Se a boca não fluir bem de umas poses para outras, é sinal que essas poses têm um numero diferente de pontos no desenho, têm de ir ao frame zero e alterar o desenho.

These are the mouths used to make the Garanhão character from the series "Tuguex" talk.
For this tutorial you'll need Anime Studio Pro and Papagayo, this one is free at Lost Marble.
All the mouths are drawn in diferent vector layers in Anime Studio Pro, and they have to have the same number of points. The layer names have to be the ones shown in the picture, or else Papagayo will not recognize them.
Now get all the different layers and group them inside a switch layer. Time to use Papagayo.
Open the program and load your audio file, in the box at the bottom of the screen type the text corresponding to the sound clip.
Now hit the "phonetic break down" button. See the green bars with your text on top of the audio file? Drag them until words align with the corresponding sound. When your happy with the synch export the .dat file and close papagayo.
Go back to Anime Studio and select the switch layer with all the mouths inside. Click in layer settings, and in the pop-up box, go to "switch". In the source data, load the .dat file you just exported with Papagayo. Now check the interpolation box and thats it!
when you close the layer settings window, key frames should appear on the timeline. Play around with the cursor along the timeline. If everything whent right, yu shoul see a mouth moving with automatic tweening from one key position to the next. If this is not happening, you have a different number of vertices on some of the mouth layers, just go to frame zero and add or remove points to the mouth you drew.

Aqui ficam duas vistas do camião 3D usado nos episódios 11 e 12 do Tuguex.
Modelado em Blender e importado para o Anime Studio Pro para animar juntamente com os personagens.

Here is a view of the whole truck used in some shots of episodes 11 and 12 of the "Tuguex" show. The 3D truck was modeled in Blender, textured in Photoshop e then imported into Anime Studio for the render of the shots.

Bang! Bang! Animation

Antes de mais peço desculpa por ter parado de postar o Tuguex, mas tem havido uns problemas com o audio dos ficheiros, em especial com o do 9 (já tenho os do 10 e 11) assim que forem resolvidos eu ponho aqui os episodios, continuando pela ordem deles.

Agora as novidades. A produção do Tuguex já acabou. Na 6ªa feira passada entreguei o último episódio na Videomedia, o que irá ser exibido na próxima 3ª feira às 23:30 na RTP2 como de costume. Na assistencia desse programa vão estar o Bubú, a Mónica e eu (não sei se o Ricardo vai), ou seja 3/4 da equipa responsável pelo Tuguex vão estar numa das mesas do Maxim, por isso procurem-nos quando estiverem a ver o programa no conforto do vosso lar.

Agora as novidades pós-Tuguex. Desde dia 4 de fevereiro que passei a fazer parte da equipa da "Bang! Bang!" Animation (eu e a Mónica, a outra animadora do Tuguex). O trabalho é bastante diferente do Tuguex, e as técnicas também. O nivel de exigencia é maior e a qualidade é bastante superior, mas os prazos tambem são maiores, o que dá tempo para aprimorar. Estamos a fazer algumas animações que serão exibidas no canal "Panda" e para DVDs, mas não posso entrar em detalhes por enquanto.

Aqui está um exemplo do uso de Photoshop nos sketches do Bubu para "A Revolta dos Pastéis de Nata". Neste caso em perticular o guião pedia que a personagem olha-se em frente e na foto a actriz está a olhar de lado, e com uma colher na boca. Então tive de apagar a colher e apagar os olhos dela, para depois por uns novos centrados.

Mais Tuguex amanhã. Não percam o episódio 8 com um personagem convidado e revelações sobre os personagens. Divirtam-se.

Here is an example of the Photoshop use in the Bubu sketches for "A Revolta dos Pastéis de Nata". In this case the script required te character to be looking straight forward, and the actress in the picture is looking sideways, and has a spoon in her mouth. So I erased the spoon and the real eyes, to insert the new ones later.

Tomorrow I'll upload a new episode of Tuguex, the show I'm currently working on. And next week, on episode 8 there'll be revelations about the character and a guest character. Enjoy.

A Tia, ou tiazorra como ela tem no messenger, foi a última personagem a ser defenida tanto em argumento como em desenho. Acabou por ser uma quarentona, hipocondriaca e com tempo suficiente de casa para mandar umas bocas ao Chefe de vez em quando.
